Hello!

Are you a cancer survivor living in Central New York and between the ages of 18 and 40? If so, read on.

A new social group is forming in central New York for young adults (ages 18-40). This group is the Young Adult Cancer Survivors of Central New York.

My name is Dan and I, like you, am a young adult cancer survivor living in Central New York. Central New York is a great place to live and work with all sorts of support and care for those dealing with cancer. Unfortunately one thing that is missing is a fun social environment to meet and interact with other young adult cancer survivors.  In the past we have only interacted in treatment centers, online, at fundraising events, or via the occasional phone call.

We need to add to these great services and interactions by working together to change our local cancer community into one that is more social and less isolated.  I have talked to many people that had no idea there were so many young adult survivors in CNY.  Many of these people are survivors themselves and have felt isolated during their treatments.According to the National Cancer Institute 1 in 10 cancer survivors is under 40 and since there are over 10 million cancer survivors in the U.S. that means there are 1 million people under 40 in the U.S. that can call themselves cancer survivors.  With numbers like that there have to be quite a few of us here in CNY, not to mention all of our supporters.

So, what we can do about this? Let’s use the power of the internet to help build our cancer community locally. Young Adult Cancer Survivors of CNY is a social group for young adults with cancer (and their supporters of course) in the Central NY area. We are trying to focus on the social and living side of being a survivor. That being said, by building this community of survivors in our local area we can find the support we all need, in yet another way. Through meet-ups and other social events we can all see that we are definitely not alone in this journey.

We are currently in the process of expanding our website to provide information to everyone interested in this group. The site includes ways to connect with others locally, online discussion forums, links to both local and national resources, and we have space for whatever else you want to see.

If you are interested in joining up or finding out more before we get everything posted please drop me a note. Heck write a comment just for the fun of it!

I hope to hear from you soon!
Dan
